Halloween Costume 2010 - Farmers

We had never been Farmer's before...Ha!  Since it is our last name it seemed like it needed to be done!  The kids weren't as thrilled with the idea, except Kade who wore cowboy boots for the first time in his life and thought he was pretty cool, his older sisters did not agree!  We got the overalls, boots, kerchiefs and hats at a costume rental store.  When getting the pictures taken at Walmart (a yearly tradition), Rick borrowed the scarecrow display and pitchfork from the store!  Rick said this is the first time coming to get pictures where he wasn't embarrassed from people staring at him as he looked like a typical Walmart customer in this outfit!  We went to the LDS church Trunk or Treat for our Halloween fun.  At the kids classroom parties I introduced my self as Mrs. Farmer, motioning to my outfit and then said "this is Claire Farmer" and "We" are the "FARMER'S" ha!  The kids had Halloween parties on Friday, Trunk or Treat on Saturday...that was our celebration this year!

Halloween Costume for 2009 was Harry Potter!  The Characters were: Professor McGonagall, Professor Snape, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter. Hermoine has her pet cat Crookshanks on her shoulder, Ron has his pet rat Scabbers on his shoulder and Harry has Hedwig the owl on his shoulder.  Each has a wand.  For the crest patch I copied it and and ironed them on black choir robes.  Curled Hermione's hair, spray painted Ron's and of course the scar on Harry's head.

At school we are "The Fruitland Grizzlies".  This year, October 2008 the characters were: A Fruitland cheerleader with pompoms, a referee with the whistle, a Fruitland coach with clipboard and whistle, a Fruitland soccer player with a soccer ball, a Fruitland basketball player with a basketball, a Fruitland Griz fan and a Fruitland football player.

I am missing year #7 which was Star Wars, October 2004...I will post it at a later date...I am pretty proud of the costume I made of Queen Padme' Amidala that looked similar to this:

Year #8 we were Super Hero's, October 2006.  The characters were Supergirl, Robin, Spiderman, Batgirl, Batman and Rick was Clark Kent turning into Superman (the costume size was a youth), so he had a dress shirt splitting open in the front and black dress pants, his Clark Kent glasses and spiked hair.  Superwoman (me), I spray painted my hair black and had the Superwoman crown on along with the silver wrist bands and silver boots.  All the costumes were purchased this year....

I of course was the old lady, Rick was the shoe.  I drew the shoe on a large cardboard box and painted it.  I attached elastic suspenders to the shoe, so Rick could "wear it".  The previous spring, the kids had been in the musical Oliver, at the local college, so I was able to borrow their professionally made orphan outfits, very cute.  Alek's outfit was actually "Oliver's" outfit, The hats for Kade and Alek we already had.  Nice expression Claire! I wore the sign around my neck that had the poem on it which read:

There was an old lady who lived in a shoe.

She had so many children, she didn't know what to do;

She gave them some broth, without any bread;

She kissed them gently and sent them to bed.

2002 we were The Wizard of Oz.  The characters were The Wizard, The Wicked Witch of the West, Aunt Em, Lolipop Kid, Lion, Glinda the Good Witch of the North, Dorthy, Munchkin, Tinman and Scarcrow.  Rick was the Wizard.  For his costume I used a great, old black tux we had, with a bow tie and a top hat. For The Wicked Witch of the West's outfit, I already had a witches outfit and painted her face green, I was Dorthy's Aunt Em and used a simple dress with a plaid apron, along with a gray wig pulled back in a bun.  There was a Munchkin and a Lolipop kid, for these I used cute plaid outfits, with shorts and made a giant sucker out of Styrofoam.  For the lion, I already had a lion costume and just painted the face.  For the tin man's costume I made the shiny outfit, using a real simple p.j. type pattern.  The tin man carried an ax and had a funnel spray painted silver, with elastic attached to hold it on her head.  I painted her face silver.  The scarecrow was a darling outfit I borrowed, with straw coming out of the sleeves and at the feet.  Dorthy's outfit we bought along with the sparkly ruby slippers...Glinda the Good Witch of the North, I had a pink princess dress already and then using pictures from the movie to design the crown out of stiff plastic decorating it with silver puff paint and then gluing it in a circle to form the crown.

Halloween Costume #4 - October 2001, 101 Dalmatians.  I was Cruella de Vil, who's costume was a black fancy flowing dress, a white boa, I spray painted my hair half white and half black and had white and black sunglasses on.  The dalmatian hats were strips of felt with black felt dots glued on them and little ears also glued from the inside of the headband so they would kind of flipped out like a dogs ear...The dalmatians each had a dog tag with different names on them, from the story.  The outfits were white sweats with larger black felt dots glued on them.  Rick was Jasper, with his dog catching net.  We used this theme for many birthday parties over the years also, so the hats have been well used for party attendees.  I dress as Cruella at the birthday's and we have a large cardboard dog house for the party....  Birthday party ideas at a later date :)

Halloween Costume #3 - The Cat in the Hat...This was in 2000, our first Halloween in Idaho.  I was the mother in the polka dot dress, Rick was the "Cat in the Hat", Alek was the little boy waiting by the window... 

Too wet too go out, 

And too cold to play ball.

So we sat in the house 

We did nothing at all.

so all we could do was to 

Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit! 

And we did not like it.

Not one little bit....

There was one mistake however, quite a big one...there was only Thing 1 and Thing 2, (Kaitlin and Joslin) then it should have been "Little Cat A" and so forth...oops...I had labeled them Thing A, B etc...all the way to Thing E.

For this costume I used wonder under again with bright pink fabric cutting out dots and ironed the dots on a white shirt and white skirt I already had.  The "Thing 1" etc., outfits, were again wonder under and white fabric circle that I painted the words "Thing 1", etc on which was then ironed on to red sweats.

This year, October 1998, Alek was born on October 1, our first boy.  The theme had to be around that important event, after having 7 girls in a row!  So I was Snow White, Alek was Prince Charming and Rick was the wicked queen, disguised as the witch.  I made the costumes AFTER the baby was born :)  Mine was purchased.  The kids beards were purchased and the wicked witch's cape was purchased.  The mining picks were made from thick foam board and then the pick end was covered with foil.  The outfits were a large rectangle with a slit in the center for their head.  The black felt belt held the outfits on.  The buckle was made from cardboard wrapped in gold foil as were the round buttons which were glued on the outfits.  The hats I sewed and made them like a night cap...Dopey had a bald cap and large plastic ears.  The witches tooth was blackened out and a basket with a plastic apple added as a prop.  I sprayed my hair black and had a red bow in it.  The prince's outfit was a royal blue rectangle with a slit for the head and a little felt cape.  The hat I sewed and added a feather on the side.  KOMO TV news, in Seattle, followed us around trick or treating.  

M&M Halloween Costume

Farmer's Dozen - Halloween Costume 1996

This week I will show all the Halloween Costumes we have done throughout the years.  All the themes we have used as a large family.  The sad part is we never "all" were dressed up because either the younger kids weren't born yet, or the older kids didn't want to participate as the younger ones were born and participating!

1996 was first year as a family that we had a theme going on, little did I realize that this would begin a tradition that at times was a hard tradition to maintain.  Even the community would begin questioning us about what we were going to be.  This year Rick was a plain M&M bag and I was a peanut M&M bag, we used the 6 standard colors for the M&M's.  We all wore white long sleeve shirts and white leggings with white gloves.  I used real M&M bags for a pattern and enlarged them on a copy machine.  The M&M costumes were square fabric that I gathered at the top and bottom and slits for the arms.  The bags were large rectangles.  The m's were traced on white fabric with wonder under and ironed on.
